IMRS Monthly Overview July 2014
The IMRS Monthly Overview provides synopses of some of the issues received and/or closed by the Issue Management Resolution System staff during the past month. The Monthly Overview informs the public about the work of IMRS and highlights issues that we think would be of most interest to external stakeholders.

IMRS Issue 14-0001968 - Instructions for Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative
Issue: Practitioner representing an estate requests guidance on how to prepare a power of attorney form to obtain information returns filed in 2012 for an individual. The taxpayer died in 2011 and the estate opened in 2013.
RECENTLY CLOSED ISSUES
Policy, Practice, Procedures
IMRS Issue 14-0001908 – Practitioner Identity Theft
Issue: Practitioners would like their Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTIN) matched with their addresses during return processing to help prevent identity theft.
Response: PTINs are not designed to cross-reference with an address, and it is cost prohibitive to make such an adjustment to the PTIN system. However, IRS is working to enable PTIN holders to create and view an online PTIN account that will show the number of returns received by the IRS with their PTINs. The PTIN holders can monitor the data for submitted returns that exceed their submissions and alert the IRS.
NOTE: Current and previous reports are also available on this site. The monthly overviews are posted for this year through the current month. You can also access reports for issues closed in prior years on the same page.
We invite you to raise your issues/concerns with your local stakeholder liaison.
