How to Run a Successful Business in the 21st Century

In recognition of National Small Business Week, the IRS-Stakeholder Liaison will co-sponsor a business symposium. The morning session (10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) is for individuals contemplating on starting a new business. Topics include: obtaining an employer identification number, writing a business plan and funding options for a business. The afternoon session (2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.) is for seasoned business owners looking for ways to strengthen their business. Discussions include social media tools, procurement and business tax credits. Limited parking is available in the area; however, the library is accessible via mass transit. There is no charge for admission to this event; space is limited.

Introduction to Business & Individual Tax and Business Bookkeeping

Lehman College Small Business Development Center and Adult Continuing Adult Education will host a 10-series workshop. The importance of record keeping will be highlighted. The workshops will include and address IRS topics such as:

  • What you need to know about federal taxes
  • How to file and pay your taxes using a computer
  • What you need to know about Federal Unemployment Taxes (FUTA)

Several other business tax requirements will be presented during the 10 workshops. IRS resources will be referenced and material distributed.

Small Business Compliance Forum (Polish)

The Polish Slavic Center in collaboration with the IRS will host a Polish Small Business Compliance Forum. Polish translators will be available. IRS Senior Stakeholder, Brenda Luke will address the Fresh Start and New Entrepreneur Initiatives, Online Payment Agreement and ID Theft. The panelists will also include speakers from various government agencies including IRS, Small Business Administration and U.S. Department of Labor.

Tax Essentials for a New Business

Lehman College Small Business Development Center will host a 3-session workshop. This course reviews the rules and regulations concerning the taxation of business entities, such as individual proprietorship, partnerships and corporations. It is essential for anyone who owns/operates their own business, as well as bookkeepers or accountants who are interested in starting a business. IRS material will be utilized for the presentation and IRS material will be distributed and referenced during the course. The following IRS topics will be discussed:

  • Lesson 1 - What you need to know about federal taxes and your new business
  • Lesson 2 - How to set up and run your business so paying taxes isn't a hassle
