Refund Tax Compliance
The IRS formed the Refund Tax Compliance Office to protect federal revenue against inmate tax fraud. The primary focus is stopping the issuance of fraudulent refunds to inmates in state and federal prisons. Recognizing inmate refund claims require more scrutiny, the RTC office works closely with state departments of correction and the Federal Bureau of Prisons to prevent sending refunds to inmates who file non compliant tax returns.
