Tax Trails - Extension to File

You may be able to obtain an extension of time to file your return.  The following questions will help you determine what and when you must file to receive an extension.

Please remember that the due dates given are for calendar year filers (persons whose tax year ends on December 31).  If you use a fiscal tax year, your due dates may be different.

If any due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the extension request will be timely if you file it by the next business day. For example:

  • If the normal due date for your return is April 15, and if April 15 falls on a Sunday, an extension request filed on April 16 (the next business day) will be timely.
