Frequently Asked Questions: Fingerprinting Requirements
1. Is the IRS conducting fingerprint checks as part of the PTIN application process? (revised 11/1/11)
The IRS is still considering proposals that would require certain tax return preparers to undergo fingerprinting, or some other type of background check, as part of the suitability check required to obtain a PTIN. PTIN applicants are not required to be fingerprinted at this time, but they must answer the questions concerning prior felony convictions and personal tax compliance on the PTIN application. If the IRS implements a proposal that would require certain tax return preparers to undergo any additional background check in the future, the IRS will contact affected tax return preparers. Any updates on background check requirements for PTIN holders will also be posted on www.irs.gov/ptin.
