Assembling the Return

Names and Social Security Numbers

To avoid delays in processing of the return, make sure that all forms, schedules, and attachments show the name(s) and social security number(s) of the taxpayer(s).

  • List the names in the same order that they appear on the first page of the return
  • Use the first social security number (or ITIN) that appears on the front of the return

The exception to this rule is that if either of the taxpayers has self-employment income tax, only the name and SSN of the person whose income is being reported should be on the forms related to the self-employment income.
