Inside the United States

In general, taxpayers living in the U.S. can receive an automatic 6-month extension of time to file their 2008 federal tax returns, giving them until October 15, 2009. Tax returns can be filed at any time during the extension period.

Taxpayers must request the extension by the due date for their return, otherwise, the request will be denied. The IRS will inform the taxpayer if the request is denied.
