Free File Fillable Forms - Other Questions

How to Pay a Balance Due?

You have four options for paying a balance due for your federal return:

  • By Check - mail a check to the IRS. See the list of addresses.
  • By Direct Debit - if you e-file your return you can choose to use the direct debit method. Fill in the required information on the e-filing worksheet. If you print and mail your return, you can use the EFTPS, a free tax payment system that allows you to make payments online or by phone (go to www.eftps.gov or call 1-800-316-6541 for details.)
  • You can pay by credit or debit card by calling a toll-free service (1-888-UPAY-TAX, 1-888-PAY1040 or 1-888-9-PAY-TAX); or accessing the Internet (www.officialpayments.com/fed, www.pay1040.com or www.payUSAtax.com). A convenience fee will be charged by the service provider. See Publication 3611, e-File Electronic Payments Brochure for more information.

  • You can pay by installment method upon approval from the IRS. Fill out Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request and you will be notified if your request has been approved.
