Amending My Return - YouTube video text script

HERE’S A TIP FROM THE I-R-S.

HI… I’M HECTOR AND I WORK FOR THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE.

DID YOU MISS A CREDIT OR DEDUCTION OR NEED TO CORRECT SOMETHING ON YOUR TAX RETURN… FOR THIS YEAR OR PAST YEARS?

IF SO, YOU CAN MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT BY FILING AN AMENDED TAX RETURN…IT’S CALLED FORM 1040-X.

HERE’S A QUICK RUNDOWN OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

FIRST…BE SURE TO IDENTIFY THE YEAR OF THE RETURN YOU’RE AMENDING AT THE TOP OF THE FORM…AND REMEMBER…NORMALLY YOU CAN ONLY GO BACK THREE YEARS.

SECOND… AMENDED RETURNS CAN ONLY BE FILED ON PAPER…NOT ELECTRONICALLY.

THIRD… IF YOU ARE AMENDING MORE THAN ONE RETURN, YOU MUST PREPARE A SEPARATE1040-X FOR EACH ONE… USE SEPARATE ENVELOPES …AND BE SURE YOU SEND IT TO THE CORRECT IRS ADDRESS DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE.

FOURTH…IF YOU ARE FILING FOR AN ADDITIONAL REFUND…WAIT UNTIL YOU GET YOUR ORIGINAL REFUND BEFORE FILING A 1040-X.

FINALLY…DON’T AMEND YOUR RETURN JUST BECAUSE OF MATH ERRORS…WE’LL CHECK YOUR MATH AND FIX THE ERROR FOR YOU.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE 1040-X AND FIND OUT MORE AT I-R-S DOT GOV.
