How to Request a Copy of Your Tax Return (ASL) - YouTube video text script
Hi. I’m Thomas and I work for the IRS.
When filing a tax return, it’s always a good idea to keep a copy.
But, what if you didn’t keep a copy of your tax return and you’re asked to provide tax return information?
Perhaps you’re applying for a mortgage or a student loan.
And you don't have a copy of your tax return.
What can you do then?
Well, a transcript of your tax return information may be just as helpful.
And not only that, the transcript is easy to get and it’s free.
You can get it online, by phone or by mail.
Just go to www.IRS.gov and click "Order a Tax Return or Account Transcript”.
Then follow the easy directions.
If you prefer to call us through Relay Service, the number is 800-908-9946.
You can also request it by mail.
Just fill out Form 4506T-EZ and mail it to where the instructions on the form tell you.
A couple of notes here:
You can get transcripts for the current year as well as for the past three years.
If you need an actual copy of your tax return, you can order the current year’s return as well as returns going back for six years.
However, it costs $57 for each year’s return.
Keep in mind though, the transcript provides most of the information people usually need. And it's free.
Again, for all the information you need to order transcripts or copies of your tax return, go to www.IRS.gov.
