Message to Taxpayers — YouTube Video Text Script
Hello, I’m John Koskinen, the new Commissioner of the IRS.
I want to share with you some important information as we enter the 2014 tax season.
This year, your household and 150 million others will be filing income tax returns.
During my first weeks on the job, I’ve made a point to start visiting IRS employees across the nation.
I’ve been talking and listening to them, and I can assure you we are all dedicated to doing whatever we canto help you file your taxes this filing season.
Helping you and serving our great nation during this year’s filing season.
Our employees have spent months preparing our tax processing systems to help make sure your filing experience goes as smoothly as possible.
We want to provide you with the assistance you need to get your taxes filed accurately and on time, and we will work hard to issue refunds quickly while increasing our efforts to stop tax fraud and identity thieves.
The fastest and easiest way to file is with e-file.
The most impressive number I have learned in my short time at the IRS is that last year over 120 million people filed their returns electronically.
And many of you can even file your taxes electronically for free through the FreeFile program available on IRS.gov.
As the new Commissioner of the IRS, I want to be upfront with you and call it like it is — just as I have been doing my entire career.
So I want to offer one caution.
Given our limited resources, our phone lines are going to be extremely busy this year — and there will frequently be extensive wait times.
We are working to limit those waiting times as much as possible and I apologize that we cannot do more in that regard this year.
But there are many ways to get help with your taxes.
A much quicker way to get answers is visiting our website at IRS.gov, which we are continually improving to make it more user friendly.
On it, you will be able to find a wide range of helpful information including the status of any refund coming your way once you file.
In addition, tax software and tax professionals can help guide you through your tax return and tax issues.
You can also get information from over a hundred IRS videos on our YouTube channel.
We even offer a free smartphone app, called IRS2Go, that lets you check on the status of your tax refund as well as get the latest news and information.
This is all part of our effort at the IRS to make filing your tax return as easy as possible.
Again, I want to assure you the entire IRS workforce will be focused on making improvements and helping you — and serving the nation.
On behalf of the employees of the IRS, thank you for listening — and thank you for filing your taxes.
