The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) was created in 1988, when Congress enacted the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). The primary mission of the NIGC is to regulate gaming activities on Indian lands for the purposes of shielding Indian tribes from organized crime and other corrupting influences; ensuring that Indian tribes are the primary beneficiaries of gaming revenues; and assuring that gaming is conducted fairly and honestly by both operators and players.
