September 9, 2021 The IRS encourages employers to use online tools and toolkits to help employees understand what the child tax credit can do for their families. The credit is larger for 2021, and other important changes are helping many families get advance payments: Families can get half the total credit amount in payments issued on the 15th of each month through December 2021. People can claim the other half when they file their 2021 income tax return. Advance payments are sent automatically to most eligible people. However, families who are not required to file a tax return or who haven't given the IRS their information need to provide some basic information using the Non-filer Sign-up Tool to get the credit. To help people understand and receive these payments, the IRS has materials in several languages. Get more information on the Advance Child Tax Credit Payments in 2021 page on IRS.gov.
