Tax Trails - Extension to File

You can qualify for an automatic extension until the extended due date of your federal income tax return if the IRS has granted an extension to file the employer's income tax return (e.g. Form 7004), the plan year and income tax year are the same, you check the applicable box on the plan return (indicating this extension), and the plan retains a copy of the extension in its records.

The IRS cannot grant a further extension under this exception if you file a Form 5558, Application for Extension of Time To File Certain Employee Plan Returns, after the regular due date of the Form 5500 series annual return/report.
