The IRS urges you to check your tax withholding or estimated tax payments soon to be sure you pay enough tax throughout the year and avoid a tax-time surprise like owing more than you expect.
Check using the IRS Withholding Estimator or Publication 505, particularly if you:
- owed additional tax with your return this year
- want to adjust the size of your refund for next year
- have a life change this year like marriage, childbirth, adoption, buying a home or an income change
- adjusted your withholding late last year
Adjust your withholding by submitting a new Form W-4 to your employer. If you don’t pay taxes through withholding or don’t have enough withheld, you can make estimated tax payments.
