Hi, I’m Maria, and I work for the IRS. Every year people ask, “Do I have to file a tax return?” You can find out by using the Interactive Tax Assistant at irs.gov/ita. Then, click on “Do I need to file a tax return?” The interactive tool will ask you a series of questions. Based upon your answers, it will tell you whether you need to file a tax return. In most cases, whether you need to file depends on your filing status, your age, how much you earn and the type of income you receive. Situations vary if you’re self-employed or if you can be claimed on someone else's tax return as a dependent. Now, just because you don't need to file a tax return, doesn't mean that you shouldn't. You might qualify for a refund. For example, you could be eligible for certain credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. But if you don’t file, you can’t claim the money you’re owed.
