(ASL) - YouTube video text script - How to Use the Tax Return Preparer Directory

Hi, I’m Patti, and I work for the IRS.

The IRS encourages you to choose your tax return preparer carefully, and we have a tool to help you make your choice.

The IRS tool allows you to look up tax return preparers with credentials or qualifications that not all tax return preparers have.

Go to /chooseataxpro to find the searchable directory.

Click "Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications."

The directory contains those tax return preparers who have one or more of the following credentials: attorney, certified public accountant, enrolled agent, enrolled retirement plan agent, or enrolled actuary.

The directory also contains tax return preparers who don’t have one of these professional credentials but who have elected to voluntarily take continuing education courses and receive an IRS Annual Filing Season Program Record of Completion.

You can search the directory by ZIP code, last name, or by a specific credential or qualification.

The search results provide the name, city, state, ZIP code, and credentials or qualifications of the tax return preparers who meet your desired criteria.

You can sort the search results by any of the categories.

If you go to the “More Information” section, you can also view descriptions of these professional designations and learn about the differences.
