The Bureau of Labor Statistics Department Store Inventory Price Indexes

Each month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes the Department Store Inventory Price Indexes, which are acceptable to the IRS under § 1.472-1(k) of the Income Tax Regulations and Rev. Proc. 86-46, 1986-2 C.B. 739, for use by department stores using the retail and last-in, first out (LIFO) inventory methods in valuing inventories.

The BLS Department Store Inventory Price Indexes for each month are published around the middle of the following month.  The most recent monthly BLS Department Store Inventory Price Indexes are available on the BLS website at the Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) page, in the “Tables Created by BLS” section under “Tables and publications containing Consumer Price Indexes” at “Department Store Inventory Price Indexes, *** (PDF).”  A schedule of upcoming release dates is also available at the CPI page under “Economic News Releases.”

The BLS Department Store Inventory Price Indexes for prior months are available at the CPI page in the “Get Detailed CPI Statistics” section under “Create Customized Tables (one screen)” at “Department Store Inventory Price Index.”
