Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and U.S. Department of Education Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) Statement about the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT)
June 2, 2017 — The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is now available for borrowers for income-driven repayment plan applications. New encryption protections have been added. The IRS DRT will return to the online FAFSA form in October.

July 19, 2016 — The IRS today announced that the “Get an IP PIN” tool has returned to IRS.gov with a stronger authentication process to help protect taxpayers.

June 23, 2016 — As part of a wider effort to protect taxpayer information and strengthen authentication standards, the IRS is putting in place new requirements for participants using the Income Verification Express Service, a service supporting the lending industry to verify loan applicant’s incomes.
IRS Statement on the Electronic Filing PIN
June 23, 2016 — As a precautionary step to protect taxpayers, the IRS today announced that the electronic filing PIN tool is no longer available on IRS.gov or by toll-free phone following additional questionable activity.

June 6, 2016 — The IRS is taking steps to help foreign students at United States colleges and universities and other foreign taxpayers who are experiencing difficulties in obtaining refunds of withholding tax reported on Form 1042-S.
Houston Area Taxpayers Affected by Severe Weather May Qualify for Relief from Penalties on Late Tax Returns
April 18, 2016 — The IRS today advised taxpayers who are affected by severe weather in the Houston area and other parts of Texas that they may qualify for relief from penalties if they are unable to meet today’s deadline for filing 2015 tax returns.

March 7, 2016 — As part of its ongoing security review, the Internal Revenue Service temporarily suspended the Identity Protection PIN tool on IRS.gov and is conducting a further review of the application.
IRS Statement On “Get Transcript”
Feb. 26, 2016 — Following an incident involving the IRS’s “Get Transcript” application discovered last May, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration conducted a nine-month long investigation looking back to the launch of the application in January 2014 for additional suspicious activity.
