How to Use the Where's My Refund? Tool (ASL) - YouTube video text script

Hi, I’m Patti and I work for the IRS.
Are you due a refund this year?
If so, you can check on the status of your refund using the IRS Where’s My Refund tool.
When you use this tool, you’ll get the most up-to-date information we have about your refund.
If you e-filed, you can start checking on the status of your return within just 24 hours after we have received your e-filed return. Or, if you filed a paper return, you can start checking on the status four weeks after you mail it to the IRS.
Just use the IRS2Go phone app.
Or go to
Both are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The system is updated every 24 hours, usually overnight.
Are you ready to check on the status of your refund? You’ll need your tax return handy, so that you can provide your social security number, filing status, for example, single, married filing jointly, et cetera, and the exact amount of your refund.
The Where’s My Refund tool will give you personalized refund information based on the processing of your tax return.
Once you enter your information, a tracker will show you where your return is in the process.
The first stage is return received.
At this stage we have your tax return, but we haven’t finished processing it yet. So you won’t get an estimated refund date at this point.
We have a few processing steps to take before we can approve your refund.
It will take a little while to get to the next stage.
Just keep in mind that the IRS issues most refunds to taxpayers in less than 21 days.
The second stage is refund approved.
If your return is here, this means we’ve finished processing your return and have approved your refund.
At this point, Where’s My Refund will provide information about the amount of your refund and the date we plan to send it to your bank for deposit.
If you requested a paper check, we’ll tell you when we plan to mail your refund.
If the tracker indicates that your refund has been sent, you are in the third stage.
In this stage, Where’s My Refund will provide two dates; the date your refund was sent to your bank for deposit, or mailed to you and the date you should see it in your bank account or receive it in the mail if you requested a check.
Where’s My Refund.
It’s quick, easy and secure.
