Individual Income Tax Returns Line Item Estimates, 2014

The 2014 Statistics of Income (SOI) line item estimates publication presents estimates of frequencies of taxpayer entries on the lines of the forms and schedules filed with individual tax returns as shown on the 2014 Individual SOI Complete Report file. The statistics are based on a sample of returns that have been weighted to estimate the entire 2014 Tax Year population. The publication includes corresponding dollar amounts of selected lines filed in concurrence with the number of returns filed.

Individual Complete Report, Publication 1304, 2014

The report is based on a sample drawn from the individual income tax returns filed for tax year 2014 and provides estimates on sources of income, adjusted gross income, exemptions, deductions, taxable income, income tax, modified income tax, tax credits, self-employment tax, and tax payments. Classifications include tax status, size of adjusted gross income, marital status, age, and type of tax computation. Brief text sections review the requirements for filing tax returns, explains the changes in tax law, and describes the sample used to produce the report.

2014 Individual Income Tax ZIP Code , County Data, and State Data

United States’ ZIP code, county data, and State data for Tax Year 2014 are now available on Tax Stats. The data present selected income and tax return items by State, ZIP code, county, and size of adjusted gross income. These data are based on individual income tax returns filed with the IRS.

For Tax Year 2013, taxpayers filed 138.3 million individual income tax returns, excluding returns filed by dependents.  The average AGI reported on these returns was $65,314, down from $66,444 for the previous year. Total AGI decreased 0.1 percent to $9.03 trillion, while total income tax increased 4.0 percent to $1.23 trillion. For 2013, the adjusted gross income (AGI) threshold for the top 50 percent of all individual income tax returns was $36,841 for the year. These taxpayers accounted for 88.5 percent of total AGI and paid 97.2 percent of total income tax.  The top 0.001 percent of tax returns had an AGI of $45,097,112 or more. These taxpayers accounted for 1.9 percent of total AGI, and paid 3.3 percent of total income tax.  The average tax rate of 13.64 percent for all returns in 2013 was the highest of this 10-year study.
