Event Information: This seminar is a 1 ½ day course to train anyone with a tax or accounting background who would like to join our volunteer instructor cadre to present the joint Federal/State Basic Payroll Tax Seminars to small business owners and employers. This is a great way to give back to your small business community, improve your public speaking skills, and meet and assist small business owners and employers.
The IRS Stakeholder Liaison office and the Employment Development Departments Taxpayer Education and Assistance office collaborated to educate the small business self-employed taxpayers in the area of employment taxes by creating a one-stop approach to employment tax outreach. IRS and EDD developed a PowerPoint presentation and comprehensive practical example to aid in the understanding and application of federal and state payroll taxes. In the past five years, we have reached over 17,000 California businesses and independent contractors providing them payroll and tax instruction.
Currently, we need qualified and motivated presenters to help educate the public in the San Jose area (including Capitola) and North Bay Area (e.g. Santa Rosa and Sonoma). The IRS will provide technical training and resource materials to those presenters who wish to volunteer to be a part of our instructor cadre. No prior experience in employment taxes or payroll is required. There is no financial obligation. Your participation is based on your schedule and availability. The course is from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on July 28 and 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on July 29. Event Information: San Jose State University in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service are offering a full day of pertinent topics addressing small business issues for those who support the success of small businesses and entrepreneurs in the community. The focus of this 3rd annual event is “best practices in operating a small business.” IRS and state tax agency employees, practitioners and university staff will be providing presentations and panel discussions on:
- Owner and Employee Benefits – including impact of the Affordable Care Act Tax Provisions
- Optimizing Business Deductions – home office, depreciation, travel and transportation, etc.
- Due Diligence in Serving Small Business Clients – Circular 230 and other rules of conduct
- Sales Tax – Avoiding California and multi-state problems
- Hiring Correctly and Avoiding Payroll, Non-tax Legal and Classification Problems
- Accounting Methods Requirements and Options for Small Businesses
CPA CPE, MCLE for California Attorneys and Continuing Education credit for Enrolled Agents and CTEC Registered Tax Preparers is being offered. Lunch and light refreshments are included.
