Basic Withholding Tax Workshop

In this free workshop, the SC Department of Revenue, along with the IRS and the South Carolina Department of Employment & Workforce, will present information to help you better understand your business obligations. Small business owners, bookkeepers, payroll clerks, new withholding tax registrants, businesses who employ seasonal workers and tax professionals should attend this workshop.

Topics include:

  • ​Federal tax law issues
  • Unemployment insurance - liability and reporting requirements
  • Basics of the SC withholding tax law
  • How to register for the withholding tax
  • When to file and pay withholding taxes
  • Electronic filing methods

Registration: Email the class date, registrant name, business name, business address and daytime phone number to TaxpayerEd@dor.sc.gov (preferred method). A confirmation of your registration will be sent via email. You can also call 803-898-5800. Parking is free for this location. Attendees should arrive at least 20 minutes early to allow time for security check-in.

In-Business Tax Workshop

This In-Business Tax Workshop will concentrate on topics
specific to help the entrepreneur who has started their business and is looking for a refresher or help to understand the following topics:

  • What you need to know about federal taxes when hiring employees/contractors
    • Employee vs. independent contractor
  • Payer responsibilities
    • Verify employee information
    • File Forms W-2 online/FIRE system
  • How to Manage Your Payroll
    • Wages subject to employment taxes
    • Accountable vs. non-accountable plans
  • How to make tax deposits and file a return to report your payroll taxes

IRS Stakeholder Liaison is providing small business materials to an instructor who is qualified to practice before the IRS. Class participation along with Q&A may take the class longer. This workshop does not award Continuing Professional Education credit and is not intended for tax professionals.

NOTE: The class may be cancelled due to bad weather or insufficient attendance to conduct the workshop. Parking is available on site.

Bookkeeping is necessary to understand the health and financial viability of businesses and to pay the proper amount of tax. Without adequate bookkeeping taxing authorities may “guesstimate” your tax liability.
