Congressional Affairs Program
In coordination with IRS Legislative Affairs and the Taxpayer Advocate Service, IRS Governmental Liaisons (GLs) play an essential role in the Congressional Affairs Program. CAP establishes and maintains relationships with congressional offices.
On a local level, GLs serve as the primary point of contact with their assigned congressional offices by:
- Providing information on tax law changes, current IRS programs and procedural issues of interest
- Responding to inquiries on non-taxpayer specific matters
- Conducting liaison meetings with congressional staff and providing briefings from cross-functional IRS representatives on a variety of topics of interest
- Coordinating IRS participation in workshops and multi-agency events, at the request of local congressional staff
National level coordination and oversight comes from Legislative Affairs.
The Taxpayer Advocate Service is responsible for answering all taxpayer specific account related inquiries from congressional offices.
