Taxpayers with families who want to file free federal tax returns have several options that offer online tax preparation, electronic filing and direct deposit of refunds for free.

IRS Direct File

Eligible taxpayers can 2023 federal tax returns online, for free, directly with the IRS for the first time.

With Direct File, taxpayers can:

  • Add their tax information with step-by-step guidance
  • Get live online support from IRS staff
  • Use a smartphone, laptop, tablet or desktop computer
  • Direct deposit their refund or make a tax payment online

Direct File is available for eligible taxpayers reporting certain kinds of income and claiming limited credits and deductions in: Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

This pilot program is available in English and Spanish. To see if they’re eligible to join, taxpayers should visit directfile.irs.gov.

IRS Free File

  • This tax preparation software is available to taxpayers and families whose 2023 total adjusted gross income (AGI) was $79,000 or less.
  • Some products are available in Spanish.
  • Using this program can help taxpayers find and calculate valuable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and the Child and Dependent Care Credit.
  • Any individual or married couple that meets the eligibility requirements can use IRS Free File, even if they have a complex tax return.
  • Taxpayers can browse trusted IRS Free File providers or use the tool in the application to help find the product that best meets their needs.
  • Each IRS Free File partner sets its own eligibility standards generally based on income, age and state residency. All taxpayers who meet the $79,000 adjusted gross income limit will find at least one free product to use.
  • Taxpayers can use IRS Free File to file their taxes on any personal computer, tablet or smart phone.

Military families can file with MilTax

MilTax online software is available for military families, military retirees, eligible veterans and is offered through the Department of Defense. Eligible taxpayers can use MilTax to prepare and electronically file their federal tax returns and up to three state returns for free.

In-person tax filing help

Qualified taxpayers can also find free one-on-one tax preparation help nationwide through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs.
