The 2020 Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals), was impacted by provisions in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 that was enacted on March 11, 2021. The publication is not being revised at this time to reflect the new exclusion of up to $10,200 of unemployment compensation.

If your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) is less than $150,000, the American Rescue Plan of 2021 excludes from income up to $10,200 of unemployment compensation paid in 2020, which means you don't have to pay tax on unemployment compensation of up to $10,200. For more details, taxpayers should go to IRS.gov/form1040 and also see the Instructions for Forms 1040 and 1040-SR.
