ITG FAQ #1 Answer - Are Indian tribes required to pay excise taxes?

In general, Indian tribes have been granted the same treatment as states and local governments with regard to federal taxes. Tribes are exempt from paying some, but not all, excise taxes when the tribe is engaged in performing "essential governmental function."
