Advantages of a tax compliance report

  • Privacy protection - Confirms compliance by listing filing history, balances owed and relevant issues, without disclosing unnecessary personal return information.
  • Broader coverage than a transcript - Covers more years than a traditional tax transcript, offering a comprehensive view of your filing and payment history.
  • Easy to read - Provides a clear compliance status – compliant, non-compliant, or compliance issue.
  • Available anytime - Download the current version from your IRS account whenever you need it.

What the report shows

The tax compliance report provides only the information needed to confirm your federal tax compliance. The report doesn’t show your income, dependents or filing status.

Here’s what it shows:

Your report will show one of the following:

  • Compliant – You’ve met all your tax obligations. You filed all returns and paid all taxes on time. You don’t have an overdue tax return or unpaid tax debt.
  • Noncompliant – You have an overdue tax return or unpaid tax debt. The data is current as of the date of the report.

Note: If you recently submitted a return or payment, it takes approximately 2 weeks for payments and approximately 4-6 weeks for the returns to post to your account.

  • Compliance issue – You may have one or more of these issues:
    • Are paying a balance due through an installment agreement
    • Have a history of filing or paying taxes late
    • Received a civil fraud penalty, even if it’s fully paid
    • Have a balance due that’s under administrative or judicial review

Lists your tax filing history. If you’re a sole proprietor required to file excise or employment tax returns, it shows any delinquent business tax returns. It doesn’t show corporate or partnership tax information.

Lists any federal taxes owed or says no taxes are due.

If they apply to you, the report may also list:

  • Late payments of federal income, employment or excise taxes for the past 4 tax years
  • Tax returns not filed or filed late in the past 6 years
  • Fraudulent failure to file or civil tax fraud penalties assessed within 5 years

Digital authentication

The IRS offers a digitally authenticated tax compliance report, available through your Individual Account.

Financial institutions, government agencies and other organizations that receive the report can use its built-in digital certificate to confirm its authenticity. The certificate also helps protect taxpayer information and maintains the integrity of the report.

Key benefits

  • Authenticated and secure – Each tax compliance report includes an IRS-issued digital certificate that confirms its authenticity.
  • Built-in verification – Verification features are embedded directly in the downloadable file.
  • On-demand access – You can access and download your report at any time through your Individual Account.
  • Standardized assurance – Each report includes the same authentication and verification features.

Tax certificate for federal contract awards

A separate tax certificate for award use (Letter 6575) will also be available for download. Letter 6575 shows whether your business has a seriously delinquent tax debt as defined by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019, if needed for federal contracting purposes.
