Business Rule IND-517

Error

A dependent Social Security Number (SSN) on your tax return is the Primary or Secondary SSN on another return. Review all solutions.

Solution

Solution 1

Your dependent has filed their own return. Check with any dependent that could have filed their own tax return and you did not check the box indicating they could be claimed as a dependent of someone else’s return.

If this is the case, you will have to print and mail your return unless:

  • You file your return without the dependent
  • You file your return after your dependent has an accepted amended return

Some amended returns can be efiled. Have the dependent check with the tax software company they used.

Solution 2

Your spouse can be claimed as a dependent on another return and you did not check the box indicating they could be claimed on someone else’s return. Check with the person(s) that could claim your spouse as a dependent. If you are convinced that your spouse cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return, you should print and mail your return, review the Fraud and Identity Theft pages.

Solution 3

If all the SSN's you entered for your dependents are correct, no one else should claim any of your dependents on their return and Solution 1 does not apply, print and mail your return, review the Fraud and Identity Theft pages.
