Business Rule IND-996

Error

The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) entered for a dependent or qualifying person is not valid.

Solution

Review the IP PIN entered for the dependent or qualifying person.

The IP PIN must be the six-digit number issued by the IRS for that individual for the current tax year. If the number is incorrect, expired, or incomplete, the IRS cannot verify the identity.

How to fix the error

  • Carefully re-enter the correct six-digit IP PIN for the dependent or qualifying person, or
  • If you do not know the IP PIN, retrieve it at www.irs.gov/getanippin by verifying the individual's identity with the IRS.

After entering the correct IP PIN, resubmit your return.

If you are making a payment, you may have to re-date Step 3, Payment Options.
