WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today the selection of John Petrella Jr. as Industry Director of Heavy Manufacturing and Transportation, Large and Mid-Size Business Division.

As director, Petrella will oversee the operations of a unit that serves 52,840 taxpayers in the air and ground transportation, aerospace, motor vehicle, shipping and real estate industries. This Large and Mid-Size Business Division (LMSB) unit is headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey.

“John Petrella brings a wealth of experience to the heavy manufacturing and transportation industries,” said Deborah M. Nolan, Commissioner of Large and Mid-Size Business. “He has worked closely with numerous industries and has also served as a senior executive at headquarters where he was responsible for designing, developing and implementing alternative tools for dispute resolution between industry taxpayers and the IRS.”

Prior to today’s appointment, Petrella served as Industry Director of Financial Services in Manhattan, New York.

Petrella holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island, a Master of Business Administration from Providence College and a Master of Taxation from Bryant College. He succeeds Thomas J. Smith who recently retired.

LMSB serves the needs of corporations, subchapter S corporations, and partnerships with assets greater than $10 million. Many of these firms operate internationally and face a range of complex issues involving the interpretation of tax law, accounting rules and other regulations.
