IR-2012-90, Nov. 8, 2012 WASHINGTON –– The Internal Revenue Service announced today that its Applications Development group has achieved Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 3. The IRS is the only large civilian U.S. government agency to have achieved this level of process maturity. The announcement comes after an independent appraisal of IRS’s application development practices conducted by Software Engineering Services Corporation. CMMI, which is maintained by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University, is used across the public and private sector. According to SEI, CMMI is a process improvement approach that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective processes, which will improve their performance.
