Submit a Free File Fillable Forms return

A transmission problem happens before the return reaches the IRS. It is different from a rejected return.

Step 4 lists the items that prevent transmission. Follow each prompt and correct every item.

When all items are complete, the program allows you to transmit the return and Step 5 becomes available.

Return to Step 4 and review every listed item. Complete required identity, signature, payment and e-file information.

If Step 4 is complete but you still cannot transmit, note the exact message and contact transmission support.

The return has been sent for processing. Allow 24 to 48 hours for an acceptance or rejection result.

Keep the account email address available and check messages from customer_service@freefilefillableforms.com.

  1. Check spam, junk and filtered folders.
  2. Sign in and review Step 5 for the current status.
  3. If Step 5 shows a rejection, use the Error Search Tool.
  4. If Step 5 does not show a result, contact transmission support.

  • Accepted means the IRS received the return for processing.
  • Rejected means the return is not filed. Correct every rejection error and resubmit.

Use Step 5 as the current Free File Fillable Forms status. After acceptance, use IRS refund, payment or account tools for later status questions.

This is no longer a transmission problem. Copy the complete latest rejection message into the Error Search Tool.

Go to rejected-return help.

Contact transmission support only when you are using Free File Fillable Forms and cannot transmit after completing the steps above.

Include your User ID, the email address used for the account, the exact error message and the steps you tried. Do not send a Social Security number, ITIN, physical address, password, bank information or a copy of the return.
