Who can use Secure Messaging

Individuals, businesses or their authorized representatives invited by the IRS will be able to use Secure Messaging.

How Secure Messaging works

IRS Secure Messaging is like web-based email services such as Gmail or Yahoo Mail. Messages can be securely sent to you by IRS representatives, and you may respond and attach documents pertaining to your account.

The Secure Messaging service will save all messages as a digital record of your communications with us. You'll be notified when you have a secure message waiting for you via a notification email.

The notification will include a link to your Secure Messaging center. To protect your privacy and reduce the potential for identity theft, we will not send personal information within the notification email.

Creating an account

If you're a new user, have your photo identification ready.

If you need help verifying your identity, visit the ID.me IRS Help Site.

If you're unable to establish an account to access Secure Messaging, see "Alternatives to Secure Messaging" below.

Authorized representatives

If you're an authorized representative for a taxpayer who has been invited to use Secure Messaging, you may also use it as long as we have an approved authorization (Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative or Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization) on file for you. To access Secure Messaging, click on the link above to register.

Alternatives to Secure Messaging

For users of Secure Messaging: If you aren’t able to create an account to access Secure Messaging, follow the instructions provided in your original notice.

For users of secure 2848 and 8821 form submission: If you're unable to submit forms online, please have the taxpayer sign the authorization form with an ink signature and mail or fax the form to the IRS per the instructions on the form.
