ITA Home

This interview will help you determine the due date of your federal tax return or whether you're eligible to request an extension.

It doesn't address filing deadlines for taxpayers located in a combat zone or a federally declared disaster area. For information on combat zone due dates, please refer to Publication 3, Armed Forces Tax Guide. For those located in federally declared disaster areas, refer to Tax Relief in Disaster Situations for more information.

The tool is designed for taxpayers who were U.S. citizens or resident aliens for the entire tax year for which they're inquiring. If married, the spouse must also have been a U.S. citizen or resident alien for the entire tax year. For information about nonresidents or dual-status aliens, please see International Taxpayers.

Caution: The federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. Until the topic can be updated, refer to Tax Day for individuals extended to May 17: Treasury, IRS extend filing and payment deadline for more information.
