IRS works closely with other Bureaus in the Treasury Department to ensure compliance with federal law. However, some issues fall outside of IRS jurisdiction.
You can report these issues to the following agencies:
U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA)
TIGTA is the Inspector General for the IRS. They investigate IRS employee misconduct, and threats or corruption attempts against IRS employees. TIGTA also investigates fraud, waste, and abuse within IRS programs and operations. TIGTA conducts audits and investigations to improve tax administration and makes recommendations on new and proposed legislation impacting the IRS.
The Department of the Treasury's Office of Inspector General (OIG)
Treasury OIG is responsible for investigating matters related to Treasury employees, programs, contracts, grants, loans, funds, or its bureaus except for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
These can include:
- Threats against Treasury employees and facilities (not IRS)
- Cyber threats against Treasury systems
- Criminals impersonating Treasury agents and employees (not IRS)
- Treasury employee misconduct
- Fraud involving Treasury contracts, grants, guarantees, federal funds, and payment integrity
- Investigating fraud related to persons representing themselves as “sovereign citizens” submitting fictitious financial instruments to Treasury, financial institutions, private companies, and citizens
- Unregistered and unlicensed Money Service Businesses (MSB)
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)
The OCC charters, regulates, and supervises all national banks, federal savings associations, and federal branches and agencies of foreign banks.
Bank customers and employees can report violations of the law to OCC.
These can include:
- A national bank making loans more than its legal lending limit
- A national bank or federal savings association employee stealing money from customer accounts or helping others steal from the bank or savings association
- A national bank or federal savings association employee approving loans to persons with whom they have an undisclosed business relationship
- A customer being unfairly debanked or discriminated against due to their political or religious beliefs or lawful business activities
Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FINCEN)
FINCEN is an intelligence collection agency that works to safeguard the financial system. You can report sanctions violations to FINCEN, including violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and the Trading With the Enemy Act (TWEA).
