Exempt Organizations Public Disclosure - Obtaining Copies of Documents from IRS

 

How can I get a copy of an organization's exemption application or annual information return from the IRS?

To request a copy of either the exemption application (including all supporting documents) or the annual information or tax return, submit Form 4506-A, Request for a Copy of Exempt or Political Organization IRS FormPDF or Form 4506-B, Request for a Copy of Exempt Organization IRS Application or LetterPDF. Submit the form to the applicable IRS office listed below:

A copy of an exemption application or letter: 
  • Form 1023,
  • Form 1023-EZ,
  • Form 1024,
  • Form 1024-A
  • Determination Letter, or updated Determination Letter (includes all supporting documents).

Be sure to complete the form before submitting and do not submit any material besides the form as this will delay processing.

You may not have to complete Form 4506-B to get the copies you need. Determination letters issued 2014 or later are available on Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS), IRS.gov/teos.

You may be able to view exempt organization returns free of charge on the IRS website.

Political Organization Filing and Disclosure:

  • Forms 990/990-EZ for section 527 (political) organizations,
  • Form 8871, Political Organization Notice of Section 527 Status, and
  • Form 8872, Political Organization Report of Contributions and Expenditures

Form 990-N (e-Postcard). Forms 990-N can be viewed individually or the entire database can be downloaded at Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS), IRS.gov/teos.

Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS)

Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF and 990-T received in 2017 or later can be viewed individually and as bulk data downloads. Note: Before you complete a Form 4506-A, please check TEOS for the form you are requesting. If return is not available submit a Form 4506-A.
