Taxpayer(s) may experience problems when electronically filing a return with an attached Form 8886

When electronically filing a return with an attached Form 8886 you may experience problems when trying to submit your return.

If you are reporting a Reportable Transaction Number on Line 1c (Reportable transaction or tax shelter registration number) on Form 8886 and the Reportable Transaction Number/Registration Number contains the word "FAX" you may experience problems when trying to submit your return.  Line 1c of Form 8886 (electronic version) has character limitations of 9-11 characters whereas the Reportable Transaction Number (RTN) you were provided exceeds those limitations.

We apologize for this inconvenience and ask that you take the following step(s) as a temporary workaround.

Step 1: Remove three of the zeros from the Reportable Transaction Number/Registration Number on Line 1c of Form 8886.

(Example-As Provided)   MA12FAX-000012 (14 characters)

(Example-After Workaround)  MA12FAX-012 (11 characters)

If the Reportable Transaction Number/Registration Number does not have three zeros to remove please remove the hyphen ( - ) and two zeros from Line 1c of Form 8886.

(Example-As Provided)   MA12FAX-002112 (14 characters)

(Example-After Workaround)  MA12FAX2112 (11 characters)

If you have already electronically filed your return and were unable to provide the Reportable Transaction Number/Registration Number due to this problem please DO NOT file an amended return to add the Reportable Transaction Number/Registration Number.

In addition, if you have not yet received your Reportable Transaction Number/Registration Number you can simply notate "Applied For" on Line 1c of Form 8886. If you have already electronically filed your return and did not notate "Applied For" on Line 1c of Form 8886 please DO NOT file an amended return to add "Applied For".
