You can now use your taxpayer identification number as either the primary or secondary number on a federal income tax return.
What you need to do
- Continue to file all required federal income tax returns.
- Contact us again to lock your account if you don’t have a current filing requirement or don’t expect to have a filing requirement in the near future.

The Identity Protection Specialized Unit can assist you with questions regarding identity theft related to your account. You can call them at 800-908-4490. You can also find the number on your notice. For all other tax account related questions, contact the IRS help desk at 800-829-1040.
