An employer identification number (EIN) is a unique nine-digit tax ID that the IRS assigns to businesses. You may need one if you:
- Hire employees
- Operate as a corporation or partnership
- File certain federal tax returns, such as employment or excise taxes
- Open a business bank account, many banks require one
- Apply for business licenses or business credit
You can get an EIN for free directly from the IRS in minutes, by applying online. Once you’ve applied, there are several ways to confirm your EIN.
- Eligible Business Tax Account users can download a digital CP575, Employer Identification Number Verification Notice in BTA. It can be used as a substitute for the original CP575A-J notice series and Letter 147C, EIN Previously Assigned.
- Request a business transcript.
- Call the business and specialty tax line.
