IR-2003-60, May 2, 2003

I want to thank the members of the Senate and the Senate Finance Committee, particularly Senators Grassley and Baucus. And I, of course, want to thank President Bush for his nomination and support as well as Treasury Secretary Snow.

I am honored to assume the important and sensitive post of IRS commissioner. The Internal Revenue Service faces challenges on several fronts. The agency must continue to improve its services to taxpayers. It also must strengthen its enforcement of tax laws and work with tax practitioners to ensure all taxpayers pay their fair share. And it must modernize its antiquated business processes and technologies.

I am looking forward to working with the men and women of the IRS. I have every confidence that, together, we can meet the high standards of service and enforcement which the agency owes American taxpayers.
