Use phone numbers on IRS notices, documents or correspondence

Houston — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that Austin area taxpayers with ongoing tax issues can now reach the IRS employees who formerly worked in the Echelon 1 building by calling the phone numbers they used prior to the plane crash on Feb. 18, 2010. The phone numbers are the same as those listed on IRS notices, documents or other correspondence that were sent prior to the crash. The IRS office was located in the Echelon 1 Building at 9430 Research Boulevard in Austin, Texas.

Interim phone numbers that were previously publicized for urgent matters related to audit (examination) cases, collection cases and Offers in Compromise as well as general tax professional inquiries should no longer be used.

Taxpayers may continue to call the local Austin Taxpayer Advocate at 512-499-5875. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization within the IRS whose employees assist taxpayers who are experiencing economic harm, who are seeking help in resolving tax problems that have not been resolved through normal channels, or who believe that an IRS system or procedure is not working as it should.
