Before you start
Important: Enter information for the spouse whose name is listed first on the tax return when you make your payment. This lets us correctly credit the payment to your account.
If you owe separate amounts on a joint return
- In most cases, the spouse whose name is listed first on the tax return may be able to use Direct Pay for their amount.
- The other spouse must pay their amount in their Individual Account or choose another payment option. You can use your bank account to pay in your Individual Account.
Don’t use Direct Pay. You can pay through your bank account in your Individual Account. Or choose another payment option.

Direct Pay is available:
- Monday to Saturday, 12:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. ET
- Sunday, 7 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. ET

- You get a confirmation number for each payment you make in Direct Pay.
Change or cancel your payment
You can change or cancel a payment within 2 days of the scheduled payment date.
Limitations
IRS Direct Pay doesn’t accept more than 5 payments in 24 hours.
A payment may not equal or exceed $10 million.
