Electronic filing:

  • The IRS is now accepting business tax returns.
  • The IRS will begin accepting all Individual tax returns at 9 a.m. Eastern on January 28, 2019.


New Schemas and Business Rules now available!  Software Developers and State organizations may access and download Schemas and Business Rules from their e-Services mailbox. In order to access these files you must have an active e-Services account and be listed on an e-File application with the provider option of Software Developer or State. Your role must be Responsible Official, or Delegated User with MeF authorities.  (Updated 02/22/2018)

Schemas and Business Rules: Beginning September 2016 Software Developers and State organizations started receiving the schemas and business rules through their e-Services mailbox rather than downloading them from the IRS website. These mailbox messages are purged after 30 days so please make sure to download them as soon as possible. Instructions for accessing the SOR Mailbox were created for your use. You may access the login page, register for e-services, reset your password, and make changes to your existing account on e-Services Online Tools for Tax Professionals.

1040 MeF Production Shutdown/Cutover Schedule

Shutdown begins on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. in order to prepare the system for the upcoming Tax Year 2018 Filing Season.

Shutdown Deadlines on Saturday, November 17, 2018 Transmitters:

Transmitting Submissions (State & Federal) 10:00 p.m. Retrieving Acknowledgements 11:59 p.m.


Transmitting Acknowledgements 11:30 p.m.

Business MeF Production Shutdown/Cutover Schedule

Shutdown for "Send Submissions" only is scheduled to begin at 11:59 a.m., Wednesday, December 26, 2018, to prepare the system for the upcoming 2019 Filing Season.

Transmitters can continue to use the other service requests except “Send Submissions” until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, December 26, 2018.

States can continue to use all the service requests necessary to retrieve and process state submissions until shutdown activities shown above. MeF recommends that states adjust their processing schedule in order to retrieve submissions in time to validate returns and submit acknowledgements.

MeF Assurance Testing System (ATS) Schedule will remain open throughout this production shutdown/cutover period.

Distribution of Modernized e-File (MeF) New Web Service Definition Language (WSDLs):

WSDLs for Tax Year 2018/Processing Year 2019 are available (WSDL version R10.2)

The new WSDLs are installed in the MeF Test environment (ATS) as of October 30, 2018. They will also be required for MeF Production for Processing Year 2019.

As a reminder you should be using the "la.alt" (la.alt.www4) for ATS and "la" main" URL (la.www4) for Production environments.
