Trump Accounts - Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about eligibility, claiming an account, the $1,000 government contribution, IRS notices and correcting an election.

Eligibility and claiming an account

1. What is a Trump Account and is my child eligible?

A Trump Account is a new type of individual retirement account (IRA) for eligible children.

A child qualifies if they:

  • Have a valid Social Security number.
  • Will not turn 18 before the end of the calendar year in which the account is established.

For information about claiming or opening an account, see Trump Accounts.

2. Where can I get help with a Trump Account?

Visit trumpaccounts.gov for program information.

You can also use the Trump Accounts app or website to check whether an account has been established for your child and begin claiming it.

For help managing your child's account, call 866-USA-4547.

3. What is automatic enrollment?

Beginning Oct. 1, 2026, the Secretary of the Treasury automatically enrolled eligible children in Trump Accounts.

If the Secretary of the Treasury automatically enrolled your child, you do not need to submit Form 4547 to elect to open the account.

However, you must claim and activate the account to manage it. If your child qualifies for the $1,000 government contribution, you must also elect to receive that contribution.

4. How do I claim my child's Trump Account?

Use the Trump Accounts app or website to claim your child's account.

  1. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, or visit the Trump Accounts website.
  2. Follow the instructions to verify your identity and your authority to manage the account.
  3. Complete the steps to claim and activate the account.

To avoid delays, make sure the information you provide for yourself and your child, including names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth, matches Social Security Administration records.

5. How do I elect the $1,000 pilot contribution?

The federal government provides a one-time $1,000 contribution to Trump Accounts for eligible U.S. citizens born from Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2028.

To request the contribution, submit Form 4547, Trump Account Election(s), and select the option for the $1,000 pilot program contribution.

You can submit Form 4547 through the Trump Accounts app, the Trump Accounts website or your IRS Individual Online Account.

If you already requested the contribution, you do not need to submit another election.

6. Is Form 4547 a legitimate IRS form?

Yes. Form 4547, Trump Account Election(s), is an official IRS form.

You can use it to:

  • Request a Trump Account for an eligible child who does not already have one.
  • Request the $1,000 government contribution for an eligible child.

See Form 4547 and its instructions.

Notices and corrections

7. Why did I receive Notice CP318 and what should I do?

You may receive Notice CP318 if you need to take additional action to complete or correct a Trump Account election.

Follow the instructions in your notice to claim an account or correct an error.

If you need to resubmit Form 4547, check the information carefully. Make sure names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth match Social Security Administration records.

IRS customer service representatives cannot correct your election by phone or help you claim the account.

8. Why did I receive a letter from Treasury about Trump Accounts?

You may receive a letter from the Treasury Department if your child may qualify for the $1,000 government contribution.

The letter explains the program, eligibility requirements and any steps you need to take.

Follow the instructions in the letter. You can also visit trumpaccounts.gov for more information.

9. Do I need to file Form 1040-X to correct Form 4547 information?

No. Do not file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to correct Form 4547, even if you submitted Form 4547 with your tax return.

Instead, follow the instructions in your CP318 notice to resubmit Form 4547.

If you need to change information after claiming the Trump Account, call 866-USA-4547.
