Business Rule R0000-503

Error

The name and/or Social Security number (SSN) of your spouse, on your Form 1040 is missing or does not match IRS records.

Solution

If your tax return indicates Married Filing Jointly

  • Make sure you have entered the spouse information on page 1 of form 1040
  • Inspect the spouse's last name and SSN for accuracy
  • If recently married, the database may be expecting the spouse's maiden name

If your tax return indicates Married Filing Separately

  • Enter your spouses' first and last name in the spaces provided, directly below where you indicate "Married Filing Separately" (at the top of page 1 of Form 1040). Do not enter the spouse first and last name in the same space. Use both spaces and place the spouse’s last name in the second space.
  • Make sure you have entered your spouses' SSN in the area designated for the spouse SSN. (This is the same area used when filing jointly, per the Form 1040 Instructions)
  • Inspect the spouse's last name and SSN for accuracy
  • If recently married, the database may be expecting the spouse's prior last name
