We only text with your permission.

We never text to ask for:

  • Personal, financial or tax account information
  • Payments of any kind
  • PINs, passwords or account numbers

We use specific short codes in IRS text messages. Read ahead for these codes.

When we send text messages

If you opt in, we send text messages for these IRS services:

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) appointments    

We send certain appointment reminders, confirmations or scheduling updates by text when you opt in. You can also get text updates when you check in to your visit and when it's your turn to be seen.

These messages are sent through short code 91040.

If you opt to get a return call from an IRS customer service agent, you may receive a text reminder beforehand. This service is available for most call topics when call volumes are high.
