Free File Fillable Forms is available from mid-January thru October 15. 

The Free File Fillable Forms is not a mobile device friendly application. 

Most account issues arise when the recommended operating systems and browsers are not used. Review the Minimum Computer Requirements to help avoid the most common issues.

You must create a new account each year. Once created, verify your email address before starting your return. Account access is available until the program closes, after October 20.

  • October 15 is the last day to create an account and efile a return
  • You have until October 20 to retransmit a rejected return or print a return
  • After October 20, the program closes for the year and
    • You cannot access the account you created
    • You cannot retrieve/view any information you entered
    • You cannot print your return

After October 20, all accounts, and related tax information, is erased from the servers.

  • Once erased, prior year tax information is not retrievable.
  • If you need a copy of an IRS accepted return, use Get Transcript.

User ID and Password Problems - Select the link “I forgot my user ID or password” and follow these steps:

  1. Enter your phone number, email address or user ID on the next screen and select “Continue”
  2. You should receive a screen to check your text messages (SMS) e-mail
  3. Check your email for a message from
  4. Follow the prompts from there to recover your account

Email Verification – If you are not receiving the email verification:

  • Make sure you are checking the email account entered in the account set-up process.
  • Many email servers may block or filter the email.  Check junk/spam or other folders that may be used by your email service for organization/filtering.
  • If you are not receiving the email verification, you may update to a more mainstream email address (not an organization such as a company or school) to have the best chance of receiving it.
  • You may also choose to verify via your mobile phone as an alternative.  Only one method of verification is required.

“Forgot User ID/ Password” did not work -  If you did not create a new account for the current tax year, “Forgot User ID / Password” will not work.  You must create a new account for the current year. If  you no longer have access to the phone number or email address used to create to your new account, you may not be able to recover the account and we will not be able to assist with recovery. If this is the case, you can create another account with your new information. 

Processing Errors – Sometimes logging out and then back in will solve the problem. If that does not work:

  1. Make sure you have the Minimum Computer Requirements
  2. Exit Free File Fillable Forms
  3. Close all programs and browser sessions
  4. Open one browser and delete your cache
  5. Turn off any auto-fill features and pop-up blockers
