Error
The prior-year information used to verify the spouses' identity does not match IRS records.
Solution
Review the identity information entered for the spouse in Step 4, E-File Your Tax Return.
To file electronically, the IRS must be able to verify your identity using one of the following:
- Your prior-year PIN, or
- Your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)
If you cannot provide the correct prior-year information
You may use an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) to file electronically.
- You can get an IP PIN at www.irs.gov/getanippin.
- You must verify your identity with the IRS to receive one.
- An IP PIN cannot be used if you are filing Form 9465 by itself (standalone).
How to fix the error
- Correct the prior-year PIN or AGI, or
- Enter a valid IP PIN, then
- Resubmit your return
