Scheduled Maintenance Build: A routine system maintenance build is scheduled every Sunday from 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., Eastern. 


Alert: The MeF maintenance build window is being extended on Sunday, February 26, 2017. The systems will be unavailable from 12:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Eastern.  The build will deploy critical system updates. This extended window affects the MeF Production and ATS Environments.

Thank you in advance for refraining from accessing the MeF Production and ATS Systems during this period. 


Software Developers and State organizations can now access and download the new Schema and Business Rules updates from their e-Services mailbox.

2017 Filing Season for Modernized e-File (MeF) Individual and Business Returns

The Internal Revenue Service has announced plans to begin accepting Individual tax returns electronically on January 23, 2017.

Note: The IRS will begin accepting all Business tax returns on January 6, 2017.


Schemas and Business Rules: Software Developers and State organizations can now access and download the most current TY2016/2017 Schemas and Business Rules from their e-Services mailbox.  In order to access these files you must have an active e-Services account and be listed on an e-File application with the provider option of Software Developer or State. Your role must be Principal, Responsible Official, or Delegated User with MeF authorities.

You may have more than one message in your account. Please open all of them to find the schema set you would like to download.

If you have the appropriate role and do not have these files available for download in your e-Services mailbox please contact the MeF Mailbox with the Company Name, ETIN and Schema Package(s) with Tax Year needed. (Updated 10:30 p.m., Eastern, 11/10/2016)


Business MeF Production Shutdown/Cutover Schedule (Updated 2:30 p.m., Eastern, 12/19/2016)

To ensure that all BMF tax returns e-filed through the Modernized e-File (MeF) system are processed timely, the following MeF Production shutdown/cutover and acknowledgment retrieval schedule has been established. It is imperative that everyone adhere to the schedule shown below.

Business MeF Production Shutdown/Cutover Schedule
Shutdown for "Send Submissions" only is scheduled to begin on 11:59 a.m., Monday, December 26, 2016, in order to prepare the system for the upcoming 2017 Filing Season.

Suggested Deadlines for Monday, December 26, 2016
    • Transmitters: Transmitting Submissions (State & Federal) 10:00 a.m.
    • States: Processing and Retrieving Submissions / Sending Acks 10:00 p.m.
Transmitters can continue to use the other service requests except “Send Submissions” until 11:59 p.m., Monday, December 26, 2016.
States can continue to use all the service requests necessary to retrieve and process state submissions until shutdown activities shown above. MeF recommends that states adjust their processing schedule in order to retrieve submissions in time to validate returns and submit acknowledgements.
Any acknowledgements not retrieved by 11:59 p.m. on December 26th cannot be accessed again until MeF opens for production in January 2017.

ATS will remain open throughout this production shutdown/cutover period.


1040 MeF Production Shutdown/Cutover Schedule (Updated 4:20 p.m., Eastern, 10/24/2016)

To ensure that all Form 1040 tax returns e-filed through the Modernized e-File (MeF) system are processed timely, this year’s1040 MeF Production Shutdown/Cutover and acknowledgment retrieval schedule has been established. It is imperative that everyone adhere to the schedule shown below.

Shutdown begins on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at 11:59 a.m. in order to prepare the system for the upcoming Tax Year 2016 Filing Season.

Important Note: States who schedule retrieval of their state submissions may have to change their schedule in order to retrieve submissions in time to validate returns and submit acknowledgements by 11:30 a.m., November 30th. Anything not retrieved through MeF by 11:59 a.m., November 30th, cannot be accessed again until MeF reopens for 1040 MeF Production for Filing Season 2017.

Distribution of Modernized e-File (MeF) New Web Service Definition Language (WSDLs): (Updated 4:00 p.m., Eastern, 07/21/2016)

WSDLs for Tax Year 2016/Processing Year 2017 are now available.

The new WSDLs are scheduled to be installed in the MeF Test environment (ATS) in November, 2016. They will also be required for MeF Production for Processing Year 2017.

As a reminder you should be using the "la.alt" (la.alt.www4) for ATS and "la" main" URL (la.www4) for Production environments.
